Dear Mother
Yours of the 24th was recieve yesterday you cannot think how glad I was to have a letter from you. My health is very good but they do not give us very pleanty to eat it is not the fault of the Govemement fr but it is the fault of the officers in command.
We have to go work hard but can stand it as long as we have the prospect of peace soon that is the hope the Soldiers have to keep them up. We had a very exciteing time the other day the rebs came down with three ironclad gunboats and tried to flank the armey but there was a Monitor in there way/and sunk one of them and sent the others to Richmond that ande made the rebs so mad that they went to shelling our camps but the Yanks was up to them in that game but for they comenced fireing on there camps and the rebs seamed to think that that did not pay so they stoped shelling they did hurt any one much they hit one tent and tore it bad but did not hit any one. so we have some thing to take our attention beside salt pork and hardtack. We have very cold weather down here but we have good tents and pleanty to do. I wrote to John the other day I should have writen to him befor but did not know how to direct and I was foolish/enough to not take the address from that envlop you sent me before I sent it to him pleas send me his address also Mary Anns and Elizebeth address pleas tell Euphemia that if she will write I will do the same. do you know how to Direct to Clifford Pierson will he get it if it is Directed to Morristown or is there there some one of else in town of the same na name. There is not much news here can you send me the Jersyman if so I wish you would for we think a great deal of papers out here give my love to all inquireing friends and pleas write as soon as conveniant
from your son
