Dear Mother &c
I have just got back from the judges office. I got through there a little earlier to day than common, and I am glad that it happened so, being that I had got your letter to answer that I got last night It is quite a rainy day to day. it has not been very pleasant lately, it seems a good deal like the weather we have to home. you say you are not having it very pleasant there now. I got the half dollar and postage stamps you sent in your letter all right, and I was glad you sent the postage stamps for I was all out, and had borrowed one or two. that little piece of flannel you sent I suppose is the same as you are making my shirts of though you did not write about it. it is a very nice piece, and I am expecting a fine pair of shirts. I think I shall always wear wool/en shirts when I get home they are so much better. I am glad that you concluded to send me a pair of boots, for you may not get the letter that I wrote, in which I sent for a pair, and now it will be all right if you dont get it. that butter you mentioned about sending I should like very much but I shall not expect it in the box, as there are three or four going to send in it. however it will do just as well, I will eat it when I get home. you wrote about Edwin Forrest, I never knew before but what he was  paroled when he was taken prisoner and I expected he was to home now. I did not happen to see Wallice while he was out here, but I saw several of his regiment. George Oldham had a brother in it. he was taken prisoner and paroled. he came to see George several times while he was at New Orleans. I wrote to you I would send you some photographs when I got payed of, and I will have some took/soon if Lime and Mark get good ones. they went and sat for some, day before yesterday they are to have them Monday. I saw some the same man took a few days ago and they were very poor ones, so I thought I would wait awhile before I had any took for they ask to big a price to get poor pictures they ask four dollars for half a dozzen. I shall not send home any money this time, and I dont know as I should have sent any if we had got two months more pay, situated as we are now. I wrote in my letter to Barker about one of the guard shooting a man the other night. last night another man was shot, one of the Wisconsin men came up to a man that belonged to the 3rd Mass Cav. (that was down here from Port Hudson to fix the telegraph wire) and asked him if he belonged to the 38th Mass. he told him no. the Wisconsin soldier said, you lie damn/you, and shot him in the arm. he fired two shots. the man that was shot belonged to the 38th once, he got transferred to the Cavalry a short time ago, they think he will have to lose his arm, they have not arwrested the other man yet. I wish it was so that Wis. Cav. could go away from here, they are rowing it half of the time. I am going to send you a dollar I found today. as it is not good till a settlement between the United States and the so called Confedracy I send it to you for safe keeping. there is bills out here now of the same bank, but they read a little different. this is all I can think of now
                                                                                    Your soldier boy
