Lewis Josselyn to Elizabeth Josselyn, 29 July 1864
                                                                                                                        Saturday 29th

Last night our Company came down into the city to do Provost Guard duty, it is new buisness to us, altogather differrent from what we have ever had before. we are guartered in the building next to the one where I was doing guard yesterday. I am afraid it is comeing rather hard on us for we have very few men. the duty is to go about the streets picking up men that have no passes and those that are drunk and so on just the same as policeman. Lime and 8 other men stop at the jail, Lime is turnkea, some of the men have to be out all night walking the streets. I hear to day our Brigade is going to stop here and do provost duty and not go on this falls campain/I hope it may be so. some of the troops are all ready on the move. we have not got any mail today as expected. Eli has just come in he has been over to see George he says he fails fast. he do not think he will stand it long. he says George is going to start, or he says he is going to try to when the rest go. I hope he may be able to reach home but I fear he never will. I saw Edmond and he had a pass and is going home by the way of Cairo, up river. this is all now I will write again soon if we stay here.
