U.S. Steamer “Tioga”

Port Royal, South Carolina, Nov 7^th, 1865.

 

My dear Miss Herrick:

                                                            As we have been obliged rather unexpectedly to touch at this place, to repair some damages to our machinery, that we sustained on our passage from Norfolk, which will necessarily detain us for a few days, I thought perhaps you would not be offended if I took the liberty of sending you a few lines, informing you of that very important fact. I am only sorry that I had not the pleasure of making your and Miss Goodwins acquaintance, before I did; Still I trust I am not ungrateful, for it has most truly been a great satisfaction to me to have had the privilege of making them at all; and I am very sure, if there is no other result happens in consequence of this acquaintance, and may I say friendship, at any rate there will be no evil or wrong of any kind resulting from it, to any of the parties. I hope Miss Herrick that I shall have the pleasure of hearing from you at Rensaealer. I don’t know that I have ever given you my address at that place; if not it is, West Gulf Squadron, via New York and New Orleans. You will please excuse my not writing a very long letter until I am certain whether they are favorably received or otherwise. Be pleased to present my compliments to Miss Goodwin, and tell her I shall be glad to hear that she is well and happy. Trusting that I shall have the pleasure of getting a letter from you at Rensaealer, and thus renewing our acquaintance, I remain my dear Miss Herrick, truly and sincerely your friend              SWiles.
