Flora J. Bethea was born on June 23, 1841, in South Carolina to Samuel J. Bethea and Mary Rogers. Her father was a farmer who owned $6,000 of real estate and $2,000 of personal property by 1860. She grew up and attended school in Marion, South Carolina. She married Stephen D. Lane on November 28, 1865, and they apparently had no children. They lived in Kerby, South Carolina, and her husband worked as a farmer. By 1870 they owned $300 of real estate and $500 of personal property. Her husband died in the late 1800s, and by 1900, she was living with a nephew in Moody, South Carolina. She died on October 17, 1900.
