Joseph Lewis Spurlock was born around October 1838 in Louisiana to Joseph and Louisa Spurlock. His father was a planter. Spurlock grew up and attended school in Carroll Parish, Louisiana, and by 1860, he was studying bookkeeping.
He enlisted in the Confederate army on May 17, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in the 3rd Louisiana Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek. He contracted measles that summer, and he informed his uncle in July 1861 that he “came very near dying.” He mustered out in early October 1861.
Spurlock settled in Lake Providence, Louisiana, after leaving the army, and he earned a living as a merchant. By 1900, he was living with his brother Robert in Planters, Arkansas, and he was working as a farm laborer. A decade later, he was living in New Orleans, Louisiana. He died there on January 7, 1920.
