Charles R. Pomeroy, Jr., was born around 1842 in Ohio to Charles and Elizabeth Pomeroy. His father was a steamboat operator who owned $4,000 of real estate and $1,500 of personal property by 1860. The family lived in Pomeroy, Ohio, until the 1850s, when they moved to Salisbury, Ohio.
He enlisted in the Union army on September 10, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company I of the 33rd Ohio Infantry on October 11. He was promoted to sergeant on October 31, 1861, to 2nd lieutenant on January 1, 1862, and to 1st lieutenant on March 15, 1864. He served as an acting assistant surgeon. The regiment took part in the Battle of Perryville, the Tullahoma campaign, the Battle of Chickamauga, and the Atlanta campaign.
Confederate forces captured him at Chickamauga in September 1863. He received a parole to “attend to the sick and wounded prisoners from the U.S. Army.” He was exchanged in November 1863, and he eventually rejoined the regiment. He was killed in action near Atlanta on August 13, 1864.
