Theodore Nathaniel Gates
Theodore Nathaniel Gates was born on June 16, 1842, in Worchester, Massachusetts, to Nathaniel and Mary Gates. His father was a farmer who owned $4,000 of real estate and $900 of personal property by 1860. Gates grew up and attended school in Worchester, and by the early 1860s, he was working as a butcher.

He enlisted in the Union army on November 1, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 25th Massachusetts Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of New Bern. He was probably wounded during the war, and he lost the use of his left hand. He was discharged for disability on September 29, 1863.

He returned to Massachusetts after leaving the army, and he married Elizabeth Amelia Gates on July 27, 1864. They apparently had no children. They lived in Westborough, Massachusetts, and Gates worked as a photographer. They travelled to Europe in 1873. His passport described him as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with dark hair and hazel eyes.

By 1880, he was working as an artist. His wife died in the late 1800s. By 1900, he was working as a grain salesman in Worcester. He married a woman named Louella around 1902, and they moved to East Providence, Rhode Island, in the early 1900s. Gates applied for a federal pension in July 1907 and eventually received one. He died of chronic myocarditis in East Providence on February 8, 1919.
