George Washington Creveling was born on December 19, 1833, in Pennsylvania to Elizabeth Creveling. His father probably died sometime before 1850. By 1850, he was working as a boatman in Bloom, Pennsylvania. He married Frances Millard, and they had at least two children: Charles, born around 1859; and Edna, born around 1876. They lived in Scott, Pennsylvania, and Creveling worked as a bookkeeper. By 1860, he owned $8,000 of real estate and $1,500 of personal property, and he employed at least one white domestic servant.
He enlisted in the state militia during the Civil War, and he served for three months. He enlisted in the Union army on July 9, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company I of the 35th Pennsylvania Infantry. He mustered out on August 7, 1863. By 1870, Creveling owned $10,000 of real estate and $50,000 of personal property. He died on May 25, 1888.
