Emanuel Swineford was born on September 16, 1814, in Pennsylvania. He married a woman named Margaret, and they had at least four children: William, born around 1841; Custis, born around 1844; Henry, born around 1846; and Thomas, born around 1849. They eventually moved to Montgomery, Ohio, and Swineford worked as a miller. By 1850, he owned $1,500 of real estate. A decade later, he was working as a farmer, and he owned $8,000 of real estate and $1,000 of personal property.
In November 1864, he pledged one gallon of sorghum to the local Relief Association to support “the poor in our midst.” By 1870, he owned $19,262 of real estate and $3,064 of personal property. His wife died on December 10, 1890, and he passed away on May 16, 1901.
