George Roden Jr.
George Roden, Jr., was born around 1841 in England to George and Rachel Roden. His father was a tailor who owned $60 of personal property by 1860. The family immigrated to America around 1846 and settled in Troy, New York. They moved to Newark, New Jersey, in the 1850s.
 
Roden enlisted in the Union army on May 30, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company K of the 2nd New Jersey Infantry. The regiment took part in the siege of Yorktown, the Seven Days’ Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Overland Campaign. He eventually earned a promotion to sergeant, and he mustered out in May 1864.
 
He settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after leaving the army, and he married a woman named Lydia. They had at least three children: George, born around 1866; Agnes, born around 1868; and Lincoln, born around 1869. He worked as a harness maker and a silk salesman. He moved to Burlington County, New Jersey, in the 1880s. He died in November 1919, and he died sometime after 1920.
