Jonas Bitner
Jonas Bitner was born on July 26, 1824, in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. He eventually moved to Ohio, and he married Lydia Hall. They had at least eight children: Amanda, born around 1851; Laura, born around 1854; Charles, born around 1856; John, born around 1859; Catherine, born around 1866; Cora, born around 1868; Edward, born around 1870; and Lillie, born around 1875. They lived in Wadsworth, Ohio, and Bitner worked as a weaver. By 1860, he owned $700 of real estate and $300 of personal property.
 
He enlisted in the Union army on August 20, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company I of the 103rd Ohio Infantry on September 15. The regiment took part in the Atlanta campaign and the Carolinas campaign. He mustered out on June 12, 1865.
 
He settled in Akron, Ohio, after the war, and he earned a living as a day laborer. By 1870, he owned $2,000 of real estate. He applied for a federal pension in August 1888 and eventually secured one. By the late 1800s, he was working as a molder. He suffered a “stroke of paralysis” in 1891, and his health never fully recovered. He died of paralysis in Akron on August 8, 1893.
