My Dear Sister
I received your kind letter last friday night but did not get time to answer it for we marched next morning by daylight into the Enemys country on a recconisance tour. Nothing of anny import happened so we returned yesterday (Monday) afternoon. We are all ready to march on another as soon as it clears up I expect that will be some time to day. I do not know the direction but some say it is in the direction of Fair Fax court house. The object is to get a topographical Survey of that country betwene our camp and that place. The Rebels have retreated back to centerville and Manasses. So we have no apprehension of them in this march. The People had all deserted/Their homes and fled on our approach on the last march. in one place they left a good hot diner Setting on the table. Which the Boys that discovered it were not slow to help themselves to the belonged to the Bucktail Regt which was in advance of ours.

close to our camp they left a good home standing open. there was a Beautiful Piano in it. Some of the Boys carried it out than commenced druming on it while others danced Get out of the Wilderness around it Of course every thing of value is taken by the Soldiers that are left in these Homesteads. But if their owners would stay at home they would protected by the Same men that plunder all they leave. The General says they will never have another fight at Manasses, he intends to Surround them and starve them/Into a Surrender. there is a good manny Sick in our Regiment. one died off our company the day we started on that march. his name was campbell frome Georgetown. The Band often Enlivens our camp with their Strains they improve verry fast. By the way I never received the Box you sent me they got it checked but of course the check was good for nother no farther than Harrisburg. Lame Harry sent me the check but that does no good the Box is at the N.C.RR depot in Harrisburg if there is annything valuable in it worthwile paying the express on it I will send for it if not I will let it go. Judging frome what I hear I think the Girles of old Northn are Becoming a great deal faster than the Boys. I want you to keep me posted about all these things if you will. Pleas tell My Friend Jennie, the/
