Robert A. Bruce
Robert A. Bruce was born on August 20, 1842, in Virginia to George and Sarah Bruce. His father was a miller who owned $3,000 of real estate and $10,000 of personal property by 1860. He grew up and attended school in Augusta County, Virginia, and by 1860, he was working as an apprentice miller.
 
He enlisted in the Confederate army on July 15, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company B of the 52nd Virginia Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the Battle of Cold Harbor. He was absent without leave from June 20, 1862, until October 26, 1862. He was wounded near Bethesda Church, Virginia, on May 30, 1864, and he died on June 3, 1864.
