                                    Dear Agnes
this beautiful sabbath evening finds me still spared and in pretty good health with the exception of a slight cold. but I sincerely hope when this reaches you it may find you all in the enjoyment of health and also the enjoyment of a peaceful mind which is life itself I have received both of your letters one on last evening and one this evening the first was not directed correctly you forgot to put on the state the letters N.Y.V.E. were not on the letter and it was only by chance that it came to me I expect it was at the 50th Reserves but finding not it owner it came here as there/but the two regiments of that number in this army. the other came directly throug and I was the happy recipient of it this evening and Agnes I can assure you it met with evry approbation. well now you want to know as concerning the sudden change in my letters, one is this when I was first engaged I was young, and during the long time we were corresponding evry thing moved of smoothly until my enlistment after which I received one or more pretty short and not very welcome letters I can tell you. and you can immagine how I felt but I returned them in a good humored way and what at last concluded our correspondence when I was to see her on my return back to my regiment there was some words passed between us and after my return to my regiment I received a letter from her which caused the final close between us it was written and in such a style as this I think Frank/you do not love me as you should do. perhaps another had better take my place at the table of correspondence. now you can see at once Agnes she doubted my love so I could not again write as I had once done and I made up my mind to write one which was the last one. but yet I could give you other reasons. one I will give you she was my senior nearly two years but yet this should not have parted us but Agnes in any estimation when two who cannot agree before their union I think it is not provident for them to be united. now my dear Friend I trust this may not be the case with you and I. you know how one feels that is here on the tented field and I trust in stead of reproachful letters, yours will be as they always have been heretofore written in the sympathy of the one to whom they are intended for. you can rest assured from this time hence that you have have the warmest love of my heart and I will/endeaver to love you as a true and affectionate lover in stead of the love of a sister. now I hope this will prove satisfactory. one thing I will ask the favor of asking you. that is if you wish to do so, you can let you mother know your intentions and if you do consult her please let me know in your next. we have not yet arrived with our train owing to the wet weather we have had a gooddeal of rain here I have visited my brother just two weeks ago to day he was well and expects very soon to return to his home and family his time will be out on the 3rd of may well Agnes it is now time for our lights to be out and I will close. my love to your good mother Dan, Aunt Chr, and to those of my acquaintences Always remembering Jack & Margie

from your true lover
