                                    Dear Agnes
 
                                    I am seated this beautiful sabbath morning to answer your thrice welcome letter which I received on last evening well Agnes the terrible battle is over but I think the hardest part of it was on the other side this time althoug we fell back into our old camps I tell you the rebles suffered a very heavy loss in killed wounded and prisoners and we took from them nearly all their heavy guns we feel pretty well satisfied we did not loose a man in our brigade my brothers are both safe one of them starts for home on next fryday morning/I was to see him yesterday I stoped with him some two hours as we were passing near their camp on our way to our own camp with our pontoon train Agnes I tell you this has been a hard march on us we have been on the go for ten successive days we got to where we are now laying at three oclock this morning but we do not expect to stay but a very few days but I do not know where we will go to from here I am well but feel pretty tired and will beg to be excused if I do not write you a long letter for I have no tent up yet. I am sitting on my knapsack with my port folio on my knee but I can take pleasure in writing to you it matters not where I am sitting or how much fatigued I may be but I can not write a very good hand for I am nervous.

first to church then to the sabbath school and then I would love to spend the remainder of the day in conversation with you. I often think of you when I am setting by my tent in the evenings but Agnes I live in hope of getting home. then I trust we can spend many happy hours togetther I am very glad to know that your mother is satisfied with our intentions I will ever strive to prove my self a worthy son to her. Agnes I have not much news to write to you and as I am very tired and sleepy I will beg to be excused. my love to your mother Dan Aunt Charlott Magie & husband and others of my acquaintence.
