Josiah Shick was born on April 19, 1832, in Pennsylvania to Henry Shick and Susanna Brown. By 1850, he was working as a “moulder” in East Vincent, Pennsylvania. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the 1850s, and he married a woman named Martha. Their daughter Susan was born around 1854. By 1860, he owned $300 of personal property.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 15, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 119th Pennsylvania Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Overland Campaign, the siege of Petersburg, and the Appomattox campaign. He was promoted to corporal on March 5, 1863, and he mustered out on June 19, 1865.
He settled in Warwick, Pennsylvania, after the war, and he earned a living as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $12,000 of personal property. He died on September 28, 1872.
