                                                                        Dear Agnes

this beautiful morning I write you a few lines to let you know I am well and safe yesterday we were called out very suddenly to lay a bridge across the rappanhannock just below Fredericksburg. we were successful in getting our bridge down after a canonading of nearly one hours duration we then crossed over some of our troops in boats and drove the rebs out of their rifle pitts capturing some thirty prisoners the balls from the enemy flew thick and fast for a time but our casualties were one killed and some eight or ten wounded in our regiment none in our/company in the fifteenth Regt there were some two or three wounded and about the same number killed the regular Engineers lost their captain killed and some few wounded. it was a bold piece of buisness to march down in front of the enemy in open day light with our bridge train and lay a bridge but evry man new his duty and he also performed it nobly as for me this time I had no command of any part of the bridge but was there and where I could see all and hear the bulletts whistle well Dear Agnes I have not much news to write you yet but will give you all in my next I trust these few lines may find you all well my love to your mother Aunt and all with whom I am acquainted
except the love of your true lover
