Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 4 July 1863
Head Quarters Engineer Brigade
Washington DC July 4th 1863
Dear Agnes
I am once more seated in my tent where I can have the privelage of writeing you a short letter to let you know I am well and safe but am pretty tired we left here on the 22nd of June and since then up to last night we were on a steady march and part of the time we marched all night so you can judge how we feel some of the boys are nearly laid up from fatigue and sore feet but being pretty tough I am ready for another tramp and I think we will get it soon but cannot say for certain we were with in a few miles of the Pennsylvania line with our whole train when in motion was nearly three/miles in length and part of the time we were fronted by a large force of rebs and also a force in the rear but we were successful in getting along with our train and by taking another rout we were successful in deceiving them and then we turned back for Washington and made our escape saveing every part of our whole train. on our march I seen my brother and very many of my old acquaintences I seen the 5th regt and talked with lieutenant Keefer who was a tentmate of James and very many others whom I had formed a slight acquaintence with. now Dear Agnes I know not when this may reach you but I hope very soon I have not received a letter from you for nearly two weeks but I suppose the mail is cut of but think it will very soon go through again as the news are pretty favorable for the union aims I think we have got to just where we can whip him to death./
we look for good news from the Militia now if they do their duty I tell you our old army will fight them in front and will do it bravely though our loss may be heavy but I think this battle will nearly close this war if we are successful Oh how glad I would be if this only would bring it to a close for then you know I would get to see those whom I love I am getting very tired of this war and will run almost any danger to help close it well Agnes I have not much news to tell you but if we leave here soon I will try to write you a few lines previous to our leaving. I commenced a letter to you on last sunday morning but could not finish it as we had to march. I now close give my love to your mother Dan and Aunt Charlott remembering your self has all the love of my heart
my regards to Maggie & husband and others from your true lover
