Harpers Ferry July 19th 1863
Dear Agnes
this sabbath evening finds me seated to write you a few lines which I hope will find you enjoying the blessing of health and with you all your friends I am well but I am very tired to night I have been working hard all day and what is worse in the water up to my neck part of the time we are getting some ponton boats out of the river it is a hard job of work but nothing is hard for the willing heart and I can truly say that I work with a willing heart for a time back for I think this cruel war will close by september if not before we now have our army back in virginia and they are harrassing lees army for certain I only hope we will be successful in annihilating his whole army/
well Dear Agnes as I have no news of any importance to communicate concerning the affairs here in the army. my Brother is well he is lying here with his wagon train. I seen my old bridge mate Don Yarley on monday last he was crossing over the river on one of our ponton bridges I hapened to have charge of the bridge or I would have missed seeing him he looks well and sends his best wishes to you and your mother. I also seen Andy brown. he is a cousin to the Miss browns in your place so if you see any of them you can tell them how he is. Agnes I am very home sick I want to see you so bad and I want to see all of my friends what would I give to be seated by your side to night how often I think of you when the shades of night begins to gather around If I could be with you I would be hapy I have not had but one letter from any one since the first of july and that was from Charles we have only had one days mail since the sixth of july I think when I receive my mail I will certainly get one from her whom I love and whose letters are most acceptible/
but Agnes I will try to let you hear from me once a week when ever I can possibly do so please tell me when you write if Aunt Charlott knows that we are engaged. let me tell you I think a great deal of her. Dear Agnes I hope you will excuse this short letter I am very tired and feel weary give my love to your mother Dan Aunt C Margie & Husband. to Aunt Mary if you see her remembering me to Mrs Martin and others I now close bidding you good by for this sabbath evening I remain your true and affectionate lover
