Head Quarters Engineer Brigade
Washington DC Aug 30th 1863
Dear Agnes
this beautiful sabbath afternoon I am quietly seated to write you a short letter. I did not write on last sabbath as I had written only a day or two previous but will try to make it suit to write every sabbath when I can possibly do so I was to church this fore noon in the city the first time I have been out to church some time I heard a good old Methodist sermon preached the first real methodist sermon that I have heard since I left your place which is just two years tuesday coming how well Dear Agnes I remember the time it does not seem as but yesterday and only I think two long years has passed. when I reflect what/changes has taken place in that length of time my heart shudders. Oh that this cruel war was over not that I am tired my self but that peace and harmony might once more reign all over our beautiful land and that the father might return to his family that all might return to their happy homes many Dear Agnes we know cannot return again they have bid adieu to this unhappy world and gone I trust to a far better yet we deeply mourn their untimely loss. I feel sad to say another of our regiment has been laid low by the hand of death he was a member of Co. E. his father was here and his remains was taken home in the midst of life we are in death how often I have thought of this would to god I were a good christian it may not yet be to late for me to turn and seek the favor of a blessed redeemer I would love to meet if I live to return a christian Dear Agnes write often I love to read your good letters I am alone at the present time of writing/and I can express my feelings the theme of the sermon I heard to day was on the neglect of religious duties how it struck me you can judge as I was once a member of the ME church now let me say to you never give way to the first temtation of sin and you never will be temted to give way to the second. I hope to meet you some day a good man when I trust we shall spend the remainder of our lives here on earth in each others society. I have no war news of importance to write so I will hasten to close on tomorrow we have a general muster after which my last year commences but I hope this war will close before it ends.
give my love to your Mother Aunt Dan and to those who may inquire for me remembering to Agnes is the love of my whole heart from Frank C Miller
PS tell me if M Lewis went as a soldier
