Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 6 September 1863
                                                                        Head Quarters Engineer Brigade
                                                                                    Washington DC Sept 6th 1863

                                                            Dear Agnes

an other beautiful sabbath has returned to welcome us it finds all here in pretty good health one who enjoys the best of health but a very anxious mind I am afraid something has happened to you or your mother as I have had no letter from you for a week past and I am begining to grow anxious, but hope such is not the case I trust when this reaches you that all may be in the enjoyment of health I would like to attend church to day but cannot as we have some work which our company will have to do but think I will get the privilage of going to night we are all busy our company in the shop and the rest of the regiment are drilling on laying bridges which will be of great value to them if they are ever called on to put down another Bridge under/fire but I hope this will not be the case there is no signs of a movement yet in our army but no telling how soon the orders may come the news from Charleston are favorable and I think before long that place will be compelled to surrender I hope the time will very soon come for I think if we are successful in captureing Charleston the war will soon close but no telling how long they will hold out yet. there is no news from our army every thing seems to be quiet and the troops are resting. I have no news in particular to write you this time I am just going to eat my dinner we have corn, fresh beef, and coffee. the corn is an extra. I will now close for the present and finish after dinner or to night

dinner is over and I will now try to finish as I was not called up on to work any this afternoon for which I feel very thankful for I love the rest of a sabbath oh that I could be where I might enjoy the rest of this day but as I am where nothing but noise and confusion surrounds me I cannot rest we have had pretty plenty of noise to day this morning at 8 oclock we had inspection/

at half past nine there was general review of our regiment and now this afternoon I understand there is to be drill but as our company is detached we will not be on drill. I am now on my last year just two years ago to day I left my then home to join this regiment the time has swiftly passed by it does not seem so long ago now I am looking forward anxiously for this year to pass it will not be long but it like the two previous may bring many changes for this we must trust in him who knows all things and changes them at his will. the weather is some cooler here but is yet pretty warm in the middle of the day. Dear Agnes as I am now nearing the bottom of the sheet I will close sending my love to one and all yet to one espeicially that one I trust I can ever love as I now do that is with all my heart
bidding you a sweet sabbath afternoon I close           your affectionate lover F.C.Miller
                                                                                                                        to Agnes V.

P.S. I send you some Cards which you can hand to some of I will say our friends say one to Maggie if you choose
