                                                                        Dear Agnes

this beautiful evening I am seated to acknowledge the receipt of another welcome missive from her whom I love I received it at noontime just before I commenced work you can imagine the interest I felt in reading it for I paid no attention to the time of working until I had read your letter. then and not til then I looked after the men who are in my charge but found them all to work then I again seated my self and read two other letters which came in the same mail that you were in one from a Mr Moyer & one from a Mr Wagner both young men with whom I have been corresponding ever since I have been a soldier. it is a great pleasure to me to receive letters from my old acquaintences but Dear Agnes/there is one whom I receive letters from that I love more than all others it to her I am now trying to write this letter. but I am afraid it will not be a very interesting one yet I will do the best I can one thing is in my favor I am alone in my tent my tent mates are gone out one to church the other to a dance the most of the company are out to night since we have been here a lone we have kept no guard and the boys go out evry evening but Dear Agnes I can spend the evenings much pleasanter in my tent writing to those whom I love than I can running around. I am not changed much in that respect you know how I was when I was boarding with your mother I cared but little about running around. I sometimes visit a family who live near our camp I think I have spoken of them frequently in my letters to you it is the only place I go but were I in your pleasant little town I think Frank & Agnes would have to make several calls one on Kate sure just tell her I am a [?] man and a soldier and not a copperhead. I think if I were at home at the comeing election I would have to bridle/my tongue for I could not take a word from those who have been living at home and quarreling a bout politics I hate a politician I am a man who upholds our goverment and our flag which has been disgraced by those whom have been born and raised under it and have been supported by it I tell you Dear Agnes I want to see this cruel war close but I want to see those who have caused the war brought to justice then I will be satisfied. there is no news from our army but I see in this mornings paper that our cavalry have had another fight in tennessee and were successful in driving the rebles and captureing a number of them and killing over a hundred but I think we will hear more from Rosenkrans army before long well Dear Agnes I have nothing new to write only to tell you I received a letter from one of my little neices the other day I tell you I felt proud over it. I now close I am well and hope this may find you all enjoying the blessing of health my love to one and all reserving Agnes the share which is due you that is all the love I can send with it a sweet kiss

                                                from your true lover
