Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 8 November 1863
Engineer Depot Washington D C
Nov 8th 1863
Dearest Agnes
this beautiful sabbath morning I take the pleasure to write you another weekly letter on last sabbath I was denied this privilage though attended to it as soon as I could. after we had our trains all ready to move the orders were countermanded and we had to unload the trains and put evry thing in their propper places which has taken up the greater part of the last week but to day we are all spending quietly. it is a lovely day. could I but be with you I would be happy. I long for the time when we shall meet. but Dear Agnes the time is not far off we both live and I hope sincerely hope that not only you and I may be blest by meeting but that thousands who/are like my self away from home and friends may enjoy the blessing of meeting them once more. I am looking for a letter from her whom I love none has come this last week but I think Agnes has been to busy to write and perhaps to day she is writing to me now these thoughts have entered my mind just as I have written them I hope I have thought correctly. I am blest with my usual good health of body, but Dear Agnes I have a wandering mind oh that my whole heart were settled and fixed on the true object of my everlasting love I want to be good but I possess such a sinful heart. now you know I do not possess a hard heart no not by any means but there is a thoughtlessness which I am striving to overcome. I have not heard from my brother yet I am begining to get anxious to hear from him. in this morning paper I see a statement of the battle of yesterday afternoon which was fought by General Sedgwicks corps. he defeated the rebles capturing twelve hundred prisoners and a battery of artillery our loss is said to be very light. well Dear Agnes we have preaching so to hear it I will leave you for an/hour church is over and he who loves to write to you is again seated in his warm tent with pen in willing hand and a much more willing heart to finish this poor letter which I hope will reach its destination by tuesday for I know there is one waiting to hear from me. the sermon was a very good one but very short as we were seated out in the open air and the air quite cool. it may be you will not hear from me again until next sabbath but you will hear once a week and perhaps oftener. I have another letter to write to day to my only sister I promised to write to her evry two weeks and must try to fulfill my promise
my tent mates are reading and cooking dinner we are going to have corn for dinner it smells good cooking and I guess will taste pretty well.
Dear Agnes I have nothing new to write this time so I will close by sending my love to your Mother Dan Aunt C. and others
excepting for your self the love of your
true lover and devoted

may god bless and protect you is the
