Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 22 November 1863
Engineer Brigade Washington D. C.
Nov 22nd 1863
Dear Agnes
I have just received a note which you have sent me with a few lines of your own hand writing on the back. how is this have you written me a letter lately if so I have not yet received it and the one you have sent me to ask my advice I have not received the last letter I have received from you is dated October 27th since then I have written you evry sabbath and have not yet received an answer. why is this do you get my letters or does some one els get them or do I not get yours. there is some cause for this. now this note came directly through for you mailed it yesterday and I am reading it to day. you have asked my advice it seems in a/letter which you have written me but which I have not received as you will see by the date of the last one which was Oct 27th and but Dear Agnes as you have been so true hearted as to send me the letter written you by a stranger I will give you my advice or try to. I perhaps have seen many such letter sent from our own regiment to young ladies by some of the best men we have and have seen some sent by the lowest and most base that we have. yet the letters if read by those who did not know them would think them almost perfect now I will not judge the young man who has written you this letter which you sent me by either the good or the bad. the letter is very well written. but Dear Agnes you know it is not for me to judge I only say be ware. I will enclose the letter with this one and send it to you again I now think more of you than I can of my self you have acted wisely and truly for which I thank you very kindly. I think it is more than many an one would have done to have asked the advice of a lover in such a case
Dear Agnes I will look anxiously for an Immediate answer to this letter and if you have no objection tell me what you did with the letter of “the Gentleman” named
James Hunter Harwood
I am well as usual and in pretty good spirits have been working this forenoon at a pile Driver which we are going to send off to the army I hope this letter may find you all enjoying the blessing of health now Dear Agnes do not forget to write to me very soon. I want to hear from you not a letter yet this month. but you know I am patient or I would scold but I always thought scolding done no good and I forbear
I now close as there is no news of interest from him who loves you Dearly & truly
I bid you a sweet yet reluctant good
afternoon. to Agnes from her lover
Francis C Miller
my love to your mother, Aunt & Dan.
