                        Dear Agnes
           
                                    I am seated this warm night to answer your welcome missive which I received last week but up to the present have not been able to answer we have been kept so busy I intended writing on sunday that was yesterday but I was sent out to the front on Saturday afternoon and did not return until this afternoon. so you see I will try to fulfill my promise as near as I can the army is now about to move for ward in force the whole of Burnsides force crossed back into Virginia to day there is now a powerful army under the command of General Grant I hope the fatal blow will be struck this time but I dread its/coming though I may not have any part to act in it but no telling I am enjoying splendid health and hope her to whom I write this may be likewise blest not her alone but all her relatives and friends oh how often I think of you Dear Agnes and wish my self by your side but I will live in hopes of seeing you and enjoying your company after while I will not write you a very long letter this time. I have been getting an ambrotype taken which I will send you hoping you will except of it. I think it is a good one. when I get my photographs I will send you one.
 
I will send you a selection of flower seeds which I have collected and the names and how they are to be planted and how long they bloom. from one who loves you truly and hopes to unite at some future day            hand and heart your Aft
