Fortress Monroe June 12th 64
My Dear Agnes
Sunday eve Dear Agnes and I am seated to pencil you a few lines in return to yours dated June first which I received at noon today. I was much pleased to hear from you but my dear agnes I am sorry to hear you are so down hearted. my dear one cheer up you see by this letter I am safe and have been ever since I left Washington though I was at bermuda hunderd over a week we expected to lay a bridge over the Appomattox river but when we got there there was a company of Engineers there and the consequence was we did not have anything to do until night before last we were ordered to pack up evrything and report here to this place. we are lying on board the boats which is the most pleasant place that a company of men can be I am well as/usual but feel a little sore from some heavy lifting which was done in loading our train to leave for this place this to me has been a very pleasant trip so far and as for me to stay in Washington I could not do so and be contented for the 2nd Lieutenant was left in command of the part of the company that was left there and him and I could not agree so I volunteered to go with the company when we left Washington I am very sorry to hear you are not well but hope when this reaches you you will be lively well and happy. please do not write any more desponding letters I love you dearly and I love to read your letters but you know when I get I get letters that are not cheerful from you it makes me feel very sad though I try to feel merry and always to look on the sunny side. try and keep in good cheer the time is fast waring away when I hope to take a seat by your side and talk over the past, present and then we must/trust for the future. for the past few days the weather has been cool and pleasant. Butlers forces made a reconnersance on friday last near petersburg and drove the rebles back and captured some prisoners there was some cannonading when we left I will not continue my letter much longer at present but you will be the recipient of your regular sabbath letters if not on tuesdays I will write to you when ever an opportunity affords me the great pleasure I now close my love to your mother Aunt C. Dan and others. I need not say my love to you for you have that at all times from one who loves you sincerely and affectionately
