Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 7 August 1864
                                                City Point Va.
Aug 7th 1864

My Dear Agnes

this beautiful sabbath morning finds me again seated to write you the regular sabbath morning letter this is the 5th sabbath that I have written and have not yet received an answer from her I love why this long silence on your part now up to the present Dear Agnes I have waited patiently but I am not all patience and I am now anxious to hear from you at least once before I  return home now do not think me angry with you for being a little impatient for I am not I do not get angry very easy since I last wrote you I have made a visit to the front to our regiment they are lying close to the reble works in front of petersburg I was up there from ten AM until four PM. I then returned to our camp here at city Point/

I am in good health and sincerely hope when this reaches you Dear Agnes that you may be enjoying fine health and also enjoying your self in other respects. I hope you are yet the devoted christian that you were when I last met you I love you more for being a christian though I am not one my self. since I last wrote you there has been some hard fighting in front our men made an assault on their works and were repulsed with pretty heavy loss and on friday evening the rebles made an assault on our works and our men repulsed them as severely as they did us a few days before since then there has been very little fighting our cavalry are all shiping on board transports to Washington and from there I think they will march up through Maryland to intercept the reble raiders I hope they will meet with ample success for those of the rebles who were up through there were nothing more than thieves and robers and I dare say many of them would murder in cold blood if an opportunity was offered I think it is high time the people of our noble state makes an effort to fortify the border counties and/organizes militia companies for its defense. but I suppose this fall coming will be more than ever ocupied by politicians fighting than by fighting those who are in rebellion. for my part I do not intend to take any part in political matters. I am only anxious to return once more where I can spend a few quiet days in peace with those I love with one I love more than others I expect to spend some if not many happy hours. you can well judge the one. her name is agnes F.V. I have nothing new to write you but will have plenty to tell you when I meet you and will have something to offer you. what it will be I will tell you it is a sweet kiss will it be excepted now if you were to see my face and see how black I am you would say I was an indian or a shade darker I am very much taned but I think two or three months will take some of it off the weather here is very warm but I have stood the heat much better than I expected I cannot say that I have suffered any at all from heat. I now close Dear Agnes. trusting her whom I love will soon answer my love to all the friends of Agnes but to her self more than a double portion your ever true lover F. C Miller
