                                                            My Dear Agnes

I am seated to write you a few lines while I am to Washington on a pass I left city Point on the morning of the 8th in charge of the remains of one of our company which we sent home from city Point per express we have been somewhat unfortunate we have sent home three in less than three weeks fever being the cause of their deaths they were all new men men who came into the army last spring there is not one sick among the old soldiers my health is very good I have just been to supper and drank some warm tea which makes the prespiration trickle down my face like rain drops. I write this letter to you as I have a good opportunity and a good place to write but the first part of the letter does not look much as if I had a good place to write. I have no news in particular to write ony that our army is now being very successful in driving the rebles out of Md. and Pa. they have driven them back into Va. I hope they will drive them into the last ditce and then blow them up it is now sundown it is a beautiful evening how I wish I could spend it with you Dear Agnes but I will wait patiently it will not be long until I can once more take your hand in mine and receive a kind welcome from you it is now getting late/

I am going to return tomorrow to the army or rather to City Point to join the part of my company again but I would much rather be there than to stay here in the city the time passes away much faster
Dear Agnes I have had no letter from you yet and I am so anxious to hear from you I hardly know how to content my self well my Dear Agnes I will close for this time with many kind wishes and bright hopes for her I love most and best Agnes

my love to one and all
                                    from your true lover
