Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 21 August 1864
City Point Va
Aug 21st 1864
My Dear Agnes
I am seated to write my regular weekly letter which I hope may reach you in due season this is almost two months I have written and received no reply how do you think I feel but I will not complain for I know something must be wrong and as I am very unwell complaining would not make me feel any better I have not been well for more than a week but I am yet with my company and am on duty this morning I went on guard it is not hard duty but some what tedious but I have well learned the lesson of patience and can endure much in that respect
Dear Agnes how I long to hear from you/but each sabbath is now shortening my term of service very fast and if we both live a very few more will perhaps find us enjoying each others society. but if I get much thiner of flesh you will not know me. since I last wrote you there has been a gooddeal of fighting and our men have been pretty successful but oh I dread a general engagement for it will result in the loss of many very many lives I have seen my brother twice this week I thought he was on his way home but not so he is yet with his train and will not be clear until the 26th of this month my time will not expire befor september but I trust now I may see home and friends and if all goes well will stay where I can enjoy their society but if not I am not the one to dwell long where I am not loved or where I do not love. but I think I will love home and friends for I have been from them quite a season/
the weather here for a few days past has been rainy but oh how welcome it comes to us soldiers who have been so long in the dry burning sun I will not continue my letter to a very great extent for I am weak and nervous but remember I have a strong mind and will hold out against almost any thing give my love to your Mother Aunt C Dan and remember to you is the love of one who can trust your honor for its return
ever your true lover
