Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 4 September 1864
City Point Va.
Sept 4th 1864
My Dear Agnes
I seat my self to write you a short letter it being the last one you will have from me until my return we are going to leave here for Elmira on the 12th of this month. but Agnes I will not come to see you until I get a letter from you to know whether I can come or not. you see I have written so many letters to you and received no answer that I do not know whether my presence will be agreeable or not. so you can rest assured that I will await an answer which you will address to me to Williamsport Lycoming Co Pa./I will be there by the 16th of this month and now Dear Agnes do not think hard of me for writing to you as I do you know I would not do so unless I had a cause. it has been nearly two months since I heard from you and the cause of such long delay on your part I cannot account for but I will say nothing more at the present for I trust your letter which I hope to receive at Wmsport will clear up all the past and I trust our meeting shall be one of pleasure to each of us we have just received the news that Atlanta has surrendered to Sherman with a very large number of troops if it is so this cruel war is very short lived my brother started yesterday morning for home his term of service having expired. I was glad to see him on his homeward road I will not write you a very long letter this time nothing new from our army but in stead of being weakened by troops going out we are dayly growing in strength two men/are now comeing in the army to evry one that is going out and we will not have to wait long for news from this army I will now close hoping soon to see the one I have long loved from true and affectionate lover
