Francis C. Miller to Agnes F. Voris, 13 November 1864

Dear Agnes
this beautiful sabbath evening I am seated to converse with you per pen and paper though not so pleasant as when seated by your side though my Dear intended we should be very thankful that we are so much blest as to have the privilage of writing. how many times sabbath evenings are denied such privilages I have been to church twice to day and each time have heard a splendid sermon this forenoon I think the sermon was one directly intended for me. how often Dear Agnes I have wished that I were a christian and to night while in church I thought over many of my past/misdoings and when I feel as I do to night how often I have wished for some one Dear Friend to set and talk too some one that I could fully trust and love. now I hope before many months that such an one I will find not in a friend but in a Dear companion
while writing this I am alone all are in bed and nothing can be heard but the silent tick of the clock and the murmer of the night wind as it pases by. how is it with you are you slumbering sweetly or are you engaged in reading some good book. now Dear Agnes I cant say that I feel sad to night but I would love to be with you and talk with you for it has become so that we cannot trust but few of our friends I will not say friends but those who only profess to be our friends it is hard for us to know who is our friends until we have tried them such has been the case of a great many of us./
how often I have thought if we would all live as we should how happy we would be.
I will now change the subject and not tire your patience with too much of a serious letter although my feelings are such to night. on tuesday evening next I am invited to attend a wedding here in town it is to be a large one as there are to be upwards of forty couples and I do not know where they will put all of them for their house is not any larger than yours but I am bound to be among the crowd if nothing happens some say I am elected to take two or three young ladies I tell them they are trusting a few too many to my care but I will try to care for them as well as I can
I will now close it is late and I am sleepy my love to all
but for your self reserve that portion which is all due you your lover truly F C Miller
