ship Iland March the 25 1862
I thought that I would write to you to let you now that I am well that I hope this letter will find the same and I should like to hav you let me now how that captin henry git along with his compy this winty and I most th let you now how the I land stanes it stanes northeast by the southwest it is tenn miles long from the fort to the other end of the iland the other end of the iland containes of woods land in the wood lang they is too little coricks that run in too the woods land they is som oysters bed in the cricks they is som larg logs that the rebles had got cut down they make good wood to burn they has som old mast that has bin washed upon the I land they is a old reck that lies out in/the ocan they say that she d tried to smugle som goods the brivertt teers stop it the capin of it set her on fire and burnt it to the warter aye and they say that they is som cole in the hole of the old reck it was there when that we come on the I land the I land groes larger awl of the time but the wind bloes the sand so that the I land groes smaller lou but they is some noles on the I land but they is a larg flat spot whare the tide over floes when the tide was a hie then that lo spot woold bes coverd over with warter And beloe that the rest of the iland is coverd over with the troops but they say that the 12 rigment [?] is going to leave the I land but the new londand gun boat went out to chase the reble steamer but they ran back so the new londed couldent get a shot at her/
the captines of our rigment has bin packing up theyer close in the box the rebles guns boats came up in site the new londand ran out after them the rebles stood fire but the new londed fired on them the rebles fired they had som very hevy firing on both sid but the new londed and one schooner with they was four rebles guns boats our guns grove them after about one half our hard firing on both site they said that the new londed was bloed up but I dont bleave that four they say that they could not but chere them when they fired I thought that by that they did not hurt her but they havent come in the harber she came in all safe in the evening she grove them off they say that they hit the rebles boats but they stood fire three ours at a time but the rebles had to run away/
