Ham (?) to Mother, 12 February 1862
Cairo Friday Evening
Feby 12th 1862
Dear Mother
I have but a few minutes to write as it is now nearly 11 oclock at night. I have been in the office till within a few minutes and snatch a moment or two to write to you. I saw Col. Haynie yesterday, who left Fort Donaldsen Tuesday night. he saw Phineas just before he left, and said he was in good health, was entirely unhurt, and in first rate spirits. Col. H. was in the same brigade with Phineas in that charge upon the enemys entrenchments when Col. Morrison was killed wounded, also Lt. Col Tom Smith of Haynies regt, and Capt Brokus were killed—He spoke very highly of Phineas conduct on the field, as did Major Brayman of Mr McClunands staff. I have no other news to write. Our Gunboats have gone up the Cumberland river as far as Clarksville
There will probably be another movement from here within a few days, destination unknown—possibly Columbus—no one knows—but something will be done sure. Good bye
Love to all—write soon—in haste
Your aff Son Ham
