Joseph T. Shaw to Jim (?), 28 July 1861
                                                                                          New York July 28th 1861

            Dear Jim
I received your welcome letter of the 24th and was glad to hear from you and you was also enjoying good health so you think that it was better for me being away from New York do you well I dont know but that it was to I expect that I will see you in your uniform about the first of October so you dont think that any young ladies run after you well I think that some do you think that I have got my share if they only are of the right kind well I hope that they are/

so that young lady in third Street said that she wish she knew Joe Shaw well she can have the pleasure of that Rowdy’s acquaintance when I come home if she wishes you can tell her so if you choose I would like to have heard Mr McCullough preach very well but I dont care about Mr Coombes for I dont like him in no shape or fashion you ask me what I think of the last battle well I think that is too bad that we were whipped in the first one but in the next I hope that we will be able to show them what we are I am glad that/Platterson has been supersede in his command for I think a great deal of it was owing his not keeping Johnson in check while he could and let reinforce the Rebels at the Junction as he did the Sixty ninth regiment and the New York Fire Zouaves fought gallantly in behalf of the good old “Stars & Stripes” I dont think that all the Pennsylvania regiments will do as the 4th did I think that some them will show the seccessionist what they are made of well I think that I have said almost enough for one time so I guess I will close so no more/
present but remain your friend

                                    Jos T Shaw

Let us all you unite is saying as the man on this envelope that the Stars & Stripes shall never come down my Respects to all my friends
