Susan W. Shelton was born around 1842 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, to William and Christiana Shelton. Her father was a laborer and carpenter. She grew up in Pittsylvania County, and she married James C. Franklin in August 1861. They had at least five children: Stella, born around 1862; Elizabeth, born around 1867; Christina, born around 1869; Mary, born around 1871; and William, born around 1876. Her husband worked as a farmer and railroad worker in Pittsylvania Couty, and he died in the early 1900s. He applied for a Confederate pension from the Virginia state government in 1909. She died of pneumonia in Gretna, Virginia, on February 12, 1921.
