                                                                                    Cavalry Depot Near City Point Va
                                                                                                            April 16th 1865
 
                                                Dear Father
                                                                        I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know that I am well and in good health. I hope this letter will find you and all the rest the same.
 
                                                                        the weather is pleasant here to day every thing looks nice a Green the Trees are leaved out Apple trees are in Bloom.
 
                                                                        We have bad news here to day it is Reported that the President is Motally Wounded the Flags are all at half mast I hope he will recover. every thing seamed to look faverable in ower behalf if it be so about the President and Sec. I am afraid it will be a put back to ower getting out of the Survis
 
            I have great hopes of getting home by/next Fall if not before. I write to you and the rest so often that you must not expect very long letters I could find pleanty to write but it would not be any news to you for you get all the war news.
 
            We have had Glorious News in the Papers for the past few days I was glad to see in the last nights paper that Recuiting and the Draft was stopped we get papers here every day.
 
                        Priscilla wrote that John had got him a Horse I hope it does not make any Trouble betwen you and him. how do you get along with the mill I hope you have good luck. I wish it was so I could get home this Spring an to help you for I know you must have it very hard to get along but I hope the day is not far distant. let be know if you got the Richmond paper and the Bill that I sent I should like to have some Postage Stamps sent for it is bad getting them here they are not very pleanty/
 
            I cannot think of any thing more to write this time I get pleanty to eat and ware and have nothing to do only to look out for my self I know how to look out for my self as far as Duty is conserns dont worry more then you can help about me. write often good by
