                                                                                    Cavalry Depot Near City Point Va
                                                                                                            April 30th 1865
 
Dear Father
                        I take my pen in hand to answer your kind letter which I received last Friday it found me in good health I hope this will find you and all the rest the same same it is quite warm here and dusty have not had much rain for some time.
 
                                                                                                I have not been so well contented for some time as I am now most all of my Company are here at Dismounted Camp George Hutchins and Charles Banks are here they are well the Regiment started last Monday for Sherman Army they left all the rest of the Boys well.
 
                        there is over Six Thousand men in Dismounted Camp now I think they will not stay here long if Johnson has Surrendered I think it will not be long before we shall start for home I have heard some talk/about ower Regiment going to ower own State good many think that we shall be home by the fourth of July.
 
                                                                                                I have a tent mate now he is a Blacksmith belongs to my Company he is here tacking care of the Captain and Leuit Horses.
 
                                                                        I saw Ruf Grant this last week he talked as though he would be at home before long they started from City Point for Washington. I thought about Mrs Beans Place how handy it would be for us I wish I was at home with you and could do the work that I could before I come away I wish we was able to buy it.
 
                                                                        I had a letter from Ruf Woodward this morning he did not write much I will write to the Girles this week I cannot think of any more to write at presant
