Lt. John Douglas Fowler.
He was wounded 1st battle
Manassas July 21st 1861—
Jefferson Davis rode over the
battle field about five or six
hours after the battle, he passed
by Lt. Fowler, dismounted, shook
hands with him, told him he
had done his duty; that he was
sorry to leave him, he could not
then reward him, but his coun-
try would later. Copy of a
letter from him to
Lt. Fowler written later follows—
