Genl E. M. Law
Dear Sir,
Your favor of the 7th inst. has been duly received. I regret to be obliged to state that I have accomplished nothing in regard to the war relics, as yet. The truth of the matter is that I cannot afford them my self, at present, and that the times are so very bad, and money is so dreadfully scarce, that is it exceedingly difficult to place any thing of the kind just now.
You have certainly been very kind and patient/in the matter, but I assure you it is not my fault, and it is simply a result of all this uncertainty and poor business. They are perfectly safe in my hands, and I feel positive, that when affairs brighten up a little, every thing will be arranged satisfactorily.
I know a person in this very city, and a very well to do man, too, who would be glad to make an offer for all or a part of the lot, but he cannot see his way clear to the putting out/of one dollar that is not absolutely necessary.
For a time, then, we must all stand by our guns and hope for the best.
I will do the best I can, you may be certain, and will write you, at once, upon receipt of any good news.
Very respectfully yours,
Robt. Coster
