Sept. 28th 1881.
My Dear Captain.
Your letter of the 23rd inst. is at hand, and in reply will state, that during the battle of Shiloh I notised your special bravery in the 48th Ohio Vol. Infty. which I then commanded, up to the time that myself and my horse were shot down near the close of the battle on Monday April 7th 1862.
On July 5th 1863, when, after the Capture of Vicksburgh, I was ordered at the head of said regiment, to pursue Johnston to Jackson, I found you suffering from a severe attack of the diarrhea; as well as I now remember, I therefore excused you from duty and left you in charge of our tents. On my return from Jackson about the 19th of the same month, you were still suffering from the same cause, at Vicksburgh.
I believe you afterwards obtained leave of Absense to return home to recuperate your shattered health produced by long and faithful services in the line of your duty in said regiment./
This is the best of my recollection and belief of the matter.
Yours faithfully.
