I, James E. Lowery, Captain of Company “E.” 48th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, in the service of the United States, in the war of 1861, do hereby certify that on the 25th day of December 1862, I was in command of my said Company, which was then en route from Memphis, Tenn. to Vicksburg, Miss. on board the steam boat “City of Alton;” that during said passage, and on said day, David Craver, a private in my said Company, while actually in said service and in the line of his duty, was injured and disabled by falling through a hatchway of said steam boat, causing a severe contusion on his head, seriously affecting his eye sight and general health—which rendered him unfit for service, and in consequence of which disability, so occasioned, he was afterwards discharged from said service, at Columbus, Ohio, on the 10th day of October 1863.

Given under my hand, at
in the State of Louisianna this Fourth day of
