                                                                                                May the 12th 1861

                                                                                                            Dear niece
I take this opportunity to inform you that I am well at present and I hope that these few lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. I would like to know what is the reason that you dont write to me any more for this is the third letter that I have wrote to you since I got a letter from you and if you think worth while to write to me I want you to write as soon as you get this letter for if I cant hear anymore from home I will join the army and then perhaps I will never hear from home and perhaps you will never hear from me again of being in the the land of the living

There is a great excitement out here about the war and almost all the boys have enlisted

I have nothing more to write at present

                        I remain your sincere              Uncle
                                                            Daniel Dickson

PS If you dont think it worth while to write to me I will you bid you all farewell
                                                                                                            Daniel Dickson
