Laban Wingate Statement, 2 June 1863
The State of Texas
County of Newton KNOW all men by these presents that I Laban Wingate of the County and State aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of two thousand dollars, to me in hand paid by D. R. Wingate of said County the receipt of which is acknowledged and acquitted, do grant, bargain, sell, alien, release, and convey unto said D. R. Wingate all my right, title, and claim in or to a certain negro man, a slave for life, named John, aged about thirty years, to have and to hold the said slave, to the only proper use, benefit and behoof of the said D. R. Wingate, and his heirs or assigns. I furthermore guaranty the said slave to be sound and healthy in mind and body, and warrant and defend the title to the same from and against my heirs, and the legal claim of any and all persons whatever claiming or to claim said negro slave—In testimony of the foregoing, witness my signature, on the Second day of June A.D. Eighteen hundred and Sixty three—
