Will (?) to Sarah Vandyke, 15 May 186X
Yorktown Va. May 15th 186[?]
Friend Sate
I received your letter and was very happy to heare from you. We are stationed at Yorktown at present but it is rumored that we are to go on and join our divisen but we hate to leave hear as we are having sutch fine times here. We have a good log cabin to live in and a counterband to cook for us and evry thing in style. All the sick are here now so that it makes it rather unplesant but they are shipping them off as fast as posible so we/ have got read of quite a number of them. We have had some sesesh Prisoners here and they are a hard looking set they have no regulor uniforms but all diffrant some of them have citisenes cloths they say that thay have to get there own cloths and there cavelery have to get there own horses.
We have got a large number of counterbands cleaning up the fort so that it looks quite well to what it did when we came here a week ago last Sunday. Jim has just received a lot of papers and magazines from home and I asure you they are very acceptable. I suppose you have read all about the evacuation of Yorktown so I will not try to describe it. I dont see whare Girty got the Idie of my thinking that you/ was to be married unles it is som of Jims nonsence but as you say all reports are not true. I have got to go on guard so I must close write soon frome your Old and loving Friend
