Albert R. Whitney to Sarah A. Whitney, 13 July 1863
Washington July 13th 1863
Dear Wife
I seat my self to write a few lines to you. we landed here yesturday after noon all safe our company was detaled to on load the boat and the Reg marched down to the railroad Depot and took the carrs for Fredrick City Pennsylvania leaving our Company behind, so when we had finished loading the bagage we wer marched to the Dept stacked our guns and went in to the Soldiers retreat and got our suppers. then we went in to a large hall and spread our blankets on the floar and lay down for the night I porsume you think it rather a hard bed, but we have become so accustomed to hard beds that/ I can lay down with my Rubber down furst and my wollen blanket four double under me, and my Gnapsack for a pillow that I can sleap just as well as I could on a bed. we ar having a nice rain this morning. it seams quite funny not to see any niggars here. soon as we wer landed white women were arround selling pies and lemonade (on Sonday) this mornning they came in with new milk for 10cts a quort. it cost 25 cts in Suffolk so Lant Crandall let me have 5 cts and I got a pint and if I did not have a good breakfast then I am mistaken. I wish I could get my pay then I could get once in a while some thing to eat that is different from/ our army living. I wish you would ask Lorrance if he will not lend me five Dollars and I will pay him soon as we get our pay. there will no money pass here except Grean Banks if he cannot let you have it ask uncle Ami or Mr Coon or Thomas. try and get it of one of them if you pleas, for I nead it quite bad. I have got nearly over the Dyerea I shall be all right in two or three dayes. I porsume we shall take the carrs and go to the Reg to day but I do not cair if I nevver see it a gain. but I must close for this time. I hope these few lines will find you and bubby well, take good cair of your self and bubby give my love to all who inquire after me and keep a good shair of it to your self. kiss little Luie for me and remember me as your ever true Husband
