Kind Father
I received your letter of the 3rd this evenning. it found me well. I suppose you ar well alltho you sayed nuthing about it. well a bout my stears, I have sayed I would not sell them for no mony you say they ar unruley as they can be. I am vary soury about it for I suppose they ar a vary nice pair. I wish you could work them or let them run with the yoke on, or hopple them some way to keep them at home I hate to sell them/ for I think they will make an able yoak of Oxen. they can be brook this winter and worked next spring. you say I have 5 head of cattle, but I guess you ar mistaken. I did not know as I had but two heffrs and the Stears, and the fodder you say I have got will keep them nearly through, and what it lacks I buy rather buy than sell them and by the way you could not get as much for them on account of theyr being unruley. you may see what you can get for them and let me know soon as posable and if the price suites me I will let you know what to/ do with them. pleas tell me what kind of a cow you think my yearling will make. I suppose the cow is a pretty good one. Major Smith of our reg started for Allegany last night for the purpose of get our horses soon as he can. you he will see you I souppose about my hors and let you know when to cairry him to Portage and then you can write me. be shure to make a letter A on each ear and under the main with white paint so I will be shure to get the one you buy for me. we ar a going to morrow to Alexandria to in a day or two to get 7 hundred/ more which Colonal Gibbs has a chance to have his pick out of 9 thousand. we shall move our camp on Bull run soon as we go down thear and get them our camp will be in a beautiful piece of woods a little ways from the old Battle field. the reg your Son is in layes about 12 miles from hear. Jerome Hubart from his company was here the other day but I did not have a chance to speat to him for we wer on drill. our Carbnes and Revolvers have come and all of our arms except our Sabers so you can see we will be mounted in a few days there is no furlows granted in the army of the Potomack, so I do not see any way or chance for me to get one. but I shall if I can. but I must end so good by. ans soon. give my love to Ma. both of you write soon. from your Son
