                                                                              Oct the 13enth 1861
 
            Dear Brother
                        I take this opertunity to write a fiew lines to you I am well as usual I have not recived that box ye yet but surpos I shall in a day or two you see it has to go to irnton and then come here which is a long road I received two leters day before yesterdy one fom you dated Sep the 8eth the other from Marietta dated September the 23erd it does not make any diference how much we move our letters always come to us we expect some work to do here in kentucky but we cannot tell whether they will fight or retreat there is trouble in our regiment between the Colonel and some of the other oficers we can not tell how it will turn out yet it may break up our/ regiment yet if it does I shall come home for a while kentucky is very pleasent to me the weather now looks just lik newhampshire the timber here is principally the same as grose there excepting there is every kind of nutts here that you can think of there is a kind of fruit here that they call poppaws they grow wild I like them very much the union people [?] seem to [paper fold] it is rumerd that we are to get our pay in a fiew days I hope so that we shall get it It is very hard for me to write I have to use my napsack for a table we can not get cary so we have to write with pencil I was shot at the other night while standing picket guard by some one concealed in the rush the ball struck the tree against which I was leaning I took aim as near/ as I could and returned the compliment but did not hit him. tell the folks to write as often as they can if I was not so far from home I would get a furlow and come home on a visit but I must close write soon from your brother
