Mr Skillman Doughty
Sir I received your kind letter of the 17 of March and was very gld to hear from you hopeing that you and your familey is all well as they leave me at presant with the exception of my being foot sore for we have been either fighting or chaseing General Lee and his aremy since the 25 of last month but we are all in good spirits since we have acomplished our great task that we started out on after the surender we have marched 47 miles back to Burksvill we are getting recrueted up again and will soon be as fresh as ever again but I hope the War is over and peace through the land/ once more I thank the Lord that I am among the liveing for I lost a good maney of my comrades in killed and wounden but thank god I am left without A scratch although the Bullets whisteled round my head very close at times for we made three charges one day capturing A great maney prisoners 4 cannon and A great part of their Waggon train I think it is all over with them now and we shall soon come north again. I have received my money yet but they say that I shall get it the next pay day so I do not think that you will have to trouble yourself about it although I am very much obliged to you for the Intrest you have taken of me
I have nothing more to say at/ presant plese give my respects to Mrs Doughty and Pamely
I remain your friend and well wisher
