Vicksburg Oct 22ond 1863
 
dear brother it is with pleasure I sit dow to inform you of my safe arival in camp I arived in camp last night about 8 oclock There was nothing of note occurred to us comeing down here We passed several boats stuck along the river There has five of our boys died since I went home of sickness The (our boys) were out last friday on a scout and one of them got his head knocked off with a shell I have just sined the pay roll we expect pay in a w few days Our camp is situated on a high hill where we can have a fair view of the town and the fortifications of the town My grub lasted untill I got to memphis We have about 20 men for duty now the rest are at and in the hospitals sick/
 
            I have just finished my dinner I had dried potatoes bread and butter and meat tea We expect to go out on another scout in ans afew days I have got to fix up bunk this after noon to sleep on We have our same old cook yet I do not of any thing to write now There was a bout five hundred soldiers returning to their regiments on the boat that I was on write when this come to hand and keep me posted and I will try and do the same
